Ankle arthroscopy-Needle should pass without resistance
The needle should pass without resistance completely into the joint space(except in the smallest ankles). Push a little fluid into the joint and then ensure this can be withdrawn, confirming that you are in the joint.
Most joints will take 10-20ml of fluid.
Occasionally the needle lies just anterior to the joint, not in it. In this case fluid will not be aspirate.
