Calcaneal osteotomy - operative indications

There are various shapes of calcaneal osteotomy, designed for different indications. This section shows only the most basic oblique osteotomy. This can be translated medially or laterally and to some extent inferiorly. Superior translation is possible and will occur if the pull of the Achilles is not noted and conteracted inter-operatively.

Examples of the use of calcaneal osteotomies:

To increase calcaneal pitch and medialise weight bearing axis in pes planus.

To lateralise weight bearing axis in an unstable ankle with varus hindfoot.

Realign a "malfused" hindfoot (eg tarsal coalition) prior to ankle procedure.
