Ankle fusion - operative indications

An open ankle fusion is indicated for severely symptomatic iscolated arthritis of the ankle joint.

It is a more robust procedure than ankle replacement, in that it has far fewer pre-operative contraindications and fewer medically imposed restrictions post operatively.

Young age, severe deformity, neuropathy, previous local sepsis and avascular bone can be treated by ankle fusion but are contraindications to replacement.

Heavy manual occupations can be returned to.

An undertaking to cessation of smoking is an absolute pre-requisite of surgical treatment.
