Akin Osteotomy - operative indications

The Akin osteotomy is used to correct hallux interphalangeus (a valgus deformity occuring distal to the MTP joint, manifested by an oblique and valgus angulation of the interphalangeal joint).

An Akin osteotomy is also used following correction of a widened intermetatarsal angle (of hallux valgus) if the mtp joint still displaces into valgus during dorsiflexion (with a single medial capsular plication suture).

An Akin osteotomy is also needed to correct any significant rotatory deformity (pronation of the hallux) associated with hallux valgus.
